Video Transcript

"Greetings! My name is Asma Hanif. I am a certified nurse midwife with a private practice in Baltimore, Maryland and this segment is on breast-feeding your baby using a nursing pillow. All new mothers must have a nursing pillow. You cannot master the art of breast-feeding without one. A nursing pillow gives you that needed support; holding your effort in just the right position over a long period of time will lead to strain in the neck and your shoulders. This would lead to a constant sensation of a dull ache or burning discomfort. Using a nursing pillow you can help with position and latch of your baby. This can help prevent problems with nursing and make it a more comfortable experience for you and the baby. If you notice that by having your arm to rest on the pillow, you do not have to hold your arm up in the air, and that is where you go tired, and if you become tired and uncomfortable, the baby will sense it, and will also have an adverse effect on your milk production. However, not all pillows are alike; learn what pillows offer what support, and which pillow helps which situations, from a preemie to twins, breast and bottle-feeding and even more. The boppy was not originally designed as a nursing pillow; however, it has come to be used quite frequently for this purpose. On behalf of Expert Village, my name is Asma Hanif and I would like to say thank you for watching."
