" Greetings! My name is Asma Hanif. I am a certified nurse midwife with a private practice in Baltimore, Maryland and on behalf of Expert Village, this segment is on breast-feeding and weaning your child. What does it actually mean to have weaned a child? Well, actually when your baby stops nursing and gets all his nutrition from sources other than the breast, he is considered weaned. Weaning, when it is the mother’s idea, it usually requires a lot of patience, and it can take just as much time depending on your baby or your toddler’s age and how well and how quickly your child adjusts. When it is the baby’s idea, it is little easier for the mother to deal with, as well as for the child to endure. In fact, one may ask when should I start weaning? You are the best judge of when it is time to wean, and you do not have to set a deadline unless you and your child are ready to do so. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that mothers breast-feed their babies for at least a year. Despite what your friends, your relatives or even strangers may say there is no right or wrong time to wean. If you feel it is the right time, then it is. On behalf of Expert Village, this is Asma Hanif saying thank you for watching. "
