"Hi! This is Ann. We are going to be talking about various concepts that you need when you start kindergarten. An important concept at the beginning of the year that the teachers would test for in kindergarten is the knowledge of rhyming words and phonemic awareness. What it is, it is you need to have your child develop an ear for the language. What words rhyme, which words are real, which words are nonsense words, these are all things you want to talk about before school starts. So for example, a classic is Mother Goose. Mother Goose and when you are reading various rhymes within a Mother Goose book, you again can point out to your child these words rhyme, they sound like a song if you will. They have may be the same ending sound. You want to again play with the sounds of the language and when you are a good listener and you understand the phonemic awareness that goes with the language, you will become a successful reader."
