Testing for Skills: Hiring a New Employee

"Hi! I’m Tina Buechler from Business Growth Training and I’m here today on behalf of expertvillage.com to talk about tips and techniques for hiring a new employee. In this clip I want to talk about testing for skills. If you’re hiring a position and you have determined that these are the fundamental skills that I require for this job, you’ve done your interview, you think this person has the skills, you’ve done your reference checks, everything looks in good order, the next step is actually test for skills. Are there certain dramatical skills, computer skills, technical welding plc, it doesn’t matter if there’s a specific skill that you’re looking for then test for it. Years and years and years from now I’ve been doing training and I’ll have people who come in and say I have excellent computer skills and I think wow that’s really not very good computer skills for excellent, I’ve had somebody else come and say oh I just have okay computer skills yet their skills are far better than the person who told me they had excellent computer skills. When people determine that their skills are excellent or good or whatever they’re doing that decision based on internal process, we don’t necessarily know it’s not a standard way to determine. So if all possible check the technical skill area, there’s lots of programs online to test for word processing, there’s lots of organizations colleges and things that can test like welding skills or programming skills, temporary agencies and organizations like that often have those tests and you can hire them to run those tests for your applicant. All of those things can just improve the chances that you’re actually getting the technical skill that you’re looking for and that’s very important especially if you’re going to be compensating this person according to the market based on the skill you’re looking for and you’re going to pay a certain amount of money you want that skill to be deliver in a way that allows you to make a profit from hiring this person."
