"Hi, my name is Mark Delgado with American Auto Service for Expert Village. Another easy indication of a bad compressor is that it is going to be noisy. It may rattle which may mean that it is low on oil or that it may be worn. This has a lot of moving parts in it and it is really the only moving parts in the air conditioning system. The expansion valve will move, but not like the compressor. It has a real high duty cycle and is a high pressure unit with a high failure rate. This is the item that will most fail on an air conditioning system leak wise and mechanical wise. So ,when you turn your air conditioner on and you hear a racket under the hood, chances are your compressor is bad."
