Series Summary

The competitive sport of boxing dates back to as early as 4000 BC in North Africa. By 1500 BC, it had reached the Mediterranean and was seen in the Olympics in Greece in 688 BC. During the 18th century, bare-knuckle boxing was popular in England. In 1853, rules for the sport were applied including fouls, counts and rings. Boxing varies in its rules even today. "This is Frankie Russo, I’m over here at Mendez Boxing – 25 West and 26th in Manhattan. I’ve got Iran Barkley, Iran ‘the Blade’ Barley, five time World Champion and I’ve got a future World Champion, Juan ‘Magic’ Newbalt. And we’re here basically to discuss how a beginning boxer could become a more advanced boxer. So where would you start? Well, first you’ve got to start early in the morning, first you’ve got to start your row work and come into the gym. You get in this fight stance, and to lock down, right there, which is good and I would tell him to step with his jab. Throw some jabs, there you go, but now as he’s jabbing, he’s going like this and I’m looking now as I’m telling him to jab and now he just stood there with his jab, I would tell him basically you’ve got your hands here, when I tell you to jab, I want you to step with your jab, your back foot, especially like that. There you go, that’s a better jab. Now you’re getting the force and the power with it. There you go, just like that. There you go, that’s the advance that I would give him. To move the head too, he’s moving the body, he’s moving his head, his composure is good. His frame is good, his form is good, everything that he’s doing is good. He’s moving the head. He’s boxing, he’s basically, you know, when he get over his stepping. I want him to step more, but he’s basically showing you basic moves right now, before you get into the step. "
