on 3/26/2009 HI I had a question about my puppies ears. I have a toy poodle that is 17weeks old. I have been cleaning my puppies ears regularly with an ear cleaner because her ears get really dirty fast. I took her to the vet and they tried to check for ear mites. But she whimpered so much when the vet tried to look in her ear. So the vet just decided to give me meds to treat for ear mites. I've been giving her the drops daily but her ears always get's so dirty and she has dark balls of ear wax that comes out when i clean her. I cleaned her again yesterday but this time instead of just dampening a tissue with ear cleaner I filled her ear canal with it as it instructs to do by the cleaner. This time I cleaned and she had a lot more black stuff come out but today her ears seems to be pretty clean. However she keeps shaking her had every so often. Like she has something stuck in her ear. This morning as she shakes her head I can hear a clicking nose when she does it. It seems like it is coming from the left ear (which was the dirtiest ear). Did I injure her ear when I was cleaning it? Oh I just wanted to mention that before when I cleaned her ear her ear was covered in hair. When I brought her in for shots at the vet the vet recommended to pluck the hairs so that it will stay cleaner. I have another dog and his ears are not as hairy. But that dog is a yorkie with floppy ears. Please let me know what I need to do?

" Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about puppy care. We have just begun the grooming series and we have just talked about brushing. Now we are going to talk about now ear care. So you want to get your puppy at a young age used to having her or his ears cleaned. I have got an ear cleaning solution right here and I have got cotton balls and what I am going to do is, come here Sweetie, … give the puppy something to do, while I am cleaning the ears this way. So I am putting some of the ear cleaning solution on the cotton ball. Once I have got it nice and soaked, pick up the puppy’s ear and wipe in there. We are going to wipe the outside of the ear, top part of the ear rather and you want to go down and clean out the inside. It is coming out pretty clean and we can do the next one. Again, you soak a new cotton ball. If the ears are dirty, which they really should not be in a puppy ear, but if they have had an infection they are. One, you want to make sure that as you are cleaning you are using new cotton ball each time, but two, you would want to take your puppy to the vet and have some medicine. So we are going to do the next ear, again I am just going to clean the top ear, clean down into the ear. Do not go too far down into the ear, but you can go further in a puppy’s ear than in a human’s ear. You should probably do this about once a week with your puppy just to keep the ears nice and clean again. Check for any strange smell and check for any strange color on the cotton balls. These ones really are fine so there is no indication that the puppy has any kind of ear infection."
