"Hi! This is Elise McMahon for Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about puppy care. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can visit my website at canineheadstart.com. So in this video clip we are talking about mouthing; you can see what this puppy is doing to my hands here. We have talked a little bit about the teeth coming in, the adult teeth coming in and how the puppies need to chew. Well when puppies and dogs play with each other, they bite each other and when puppies play with us as humans they will often be biting us. It is not an aggressive thing, it is a play thing, she is being very playful and friendly right now, but I do not want to have an adult dog that bites my hand, so when you have got a puppy that is mouthing and playing around like this, what you want to do is you want to re-direct it. The best way to redirect it and the best way to redirect it is if they are mouthing your hand, you give him something appropriate to chew on, let him go take that off and play with that, so when your puppy is mouthing, you essentially want to redirect the behaviour towards something else. Another thing that you can do when the puppy is mouthing you is you can just get up and stop the game completely; typically mouthing behaviour will start to really drop off after they have got their full adult teeth in, but it can be quite exasperating for the humans that live in the house during that puppy mouthing time."
