"Hi this is Elise for ExpertVillage.com and in this second of two video clips we’re going to be talking about how to teach your dog to walk politely with you on leash. We just covered off leash walking and I showed you how you would need to frequently mark your dog for walking on the correct area. One of the reasons I like to start with off leash walking is so people don’t use the leash as a steering device, really the leash ought to be a safety device for you, but you don’t want to be pulling your dog all over the place, that’s why we start with off leash walking. But now we’ve done a little bit of off leash walking, we’re going to be doing a little bit of on leash walking. Let’s go. When you start, the first thing you want to do is let the dog know that you’re about to head off walking with her. So with Ursa, I’m going to give her a couple of cues to let her know I’m about to start. I’ll ask her to watch me, I’ll ask her to let’s go. I don’t want to just haul the dog off and assume that it’s going to be able to figure out what I want it to do. I want to let it know that we’re going to start walking. I also want to keep this leash loose. So I’m going to try to keep it fairly loose in my hand, Ursa ready? Let’s go, good girl. And when she’s walking when I want her to, just as in the off leash work, I’m going to click and reward, good girl. Let’s go. Notice that my leash is loose, good girl. Let’s go, let’s go. Good girl. When I get her attention back on me, I’m going to click and reward. Good girl, wait. So there’s our first lesson on walking politely with your dog on leash. "
