Shetland Sheepdogs, otherwise known as Shelties, are great companions. They are very easy to train and are great around kids and other dogs. Shetland Sheepdogs can make a great addition to any family. Here are some training tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Leash
  • Collar
  • Treats
Step1
Shetland Sheepdogs are very intelligent dogs and can learn fast. They can be easy to train because they are easy to motivate; they like treats and toys!
Step2
Keep in mind that Shetland Sheepdogs are from the herding breed. They do like to chase because of this. Some like to herd children and anything that moves.
Step3
Give your Sheltie exercise. They need to exercise their bodies and their brains. If they do not get enough exercise they can be difficult to train.
Step4
Establish leadership with your Shetland Sheepdog. All dogs are pack animals. We have to teach our dogs that we are the leaders. The better you are at becoming the pack leader, the easier it will be for you to train your dog. Leadership requires you taking charge and establishing some boundaries.

Tips & Warnings

  • Start training your Shetland Sheepdog at an early age.
  • Socialize your Sheltie as young as 8 weeks old.
  • Use positive reinforcement to train.
  • You do not have to use harsh methods to train a Shetland Sheepdog.
