In order to be an effective post player, you must get in the proper position to make your post move. This article will describe how to position yourself properly before making a post move.
Get to your desired post position before the defender - the defender will try to take away your position and make you start your post move further away from the basket
Be sure that you are not in the 3-second lane when setting up in the post
Step1
Get in proper position. Your feet should be just outside the lane and next to the block. You should be in a strong position with your feet just beyond shoulder width and your knees bent. This strong position will help you maintain your space when the defender is pushing on you.
Step2
Determine what side of your body that the defender is favoring. This is important to understand as it will determine where the pass should be thrown and which way you will pivot to take the shot.
Step3
Put a hand out as a target for your teammate to throw you a bounce pass.
Step4
Call for the ball. This is a signal to your teammate that you are in a ready position to make a good post move.
Step5
Catch the bounce pass and secure it under your chin with your elbows out.
Step6
Make a head and shoulder fake towards the defender to get them moving away from where you will make your move.
Step7
Utilize one of your post moves to score a basket. See related Post Move articles for guidance.
