Step 1
Get in proper position. Your feet should be just outside the lane and next to the block. You should be in a strong position with your feet just beyond shoulder width and your knees bent. This strong position will help you maintain your space when the defender is pushing on you.
-
Step 2
Determine what side of your body that the defender is favoring. This is important to understand as it will determine where the pass should be thrown and which way you will pivot to take the shot.
-
Step 3
Put a hand out as a target for your teammate to throw you a bounce pass.
-
Step 4
Call for the ball. This is a signal to your teammate that you are in a ready position to make a good post move.
-
Step 5
Catch the bounce pass and secure it under your chin with your elbows out.
-
Step 6
Make a head and shoulder fake towards the defender to get them moving away from where you will make your move.
-
Step 7
Take the leg that is further away from the defender and drop it into the lane. This will effectively seal the defender off leave an opening for a shot.
-
Step 8
Take a power dribble and go up strong for a lay-up.

on 4/1/2008 Coach Ken: Thanks for your commments. I couldn't agree with you more...the post players should be rewarded for their hard work in establishing post position. There is an article written for passing into the post("How to Pass into the Post Player in Basketball"). Let me know what you think.

on 3/21/2008 Good Job. Can you do an instructional piece on how to throw a proper post pass. I see too many big guys that work hard to establish a great post position, but their guards don't know how to get the ball to them. The 3 point shot has ruined a great game,
