Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Tips & Warnings:
- Check to make sure there are no laws at your beach prohibiting this.
- Wear long sleeves, pants, and a hood, and possibly gloves, just to be safe. I have never been bitten while doing this but they are still wild. Also, wearing these will reduce the risk of getting "dump on" and having it come in contact with your bare skin. I also have not had a problem with this personally, but when you get 30-plus excited seagulls hovering in the same area you never know.
- Also avoid doing this from inside a car you are afraid to get a tiny scratch on. I didnt get any on mine, but there is always a chance.
Step1
If something like this doesn't appeal to you at all then that's fine. But if you are reading this article it must have peaked your interest a little. The best time to do this is in the early Winter or early Spring. At that time there aren't any sunbathers on the beach who might get annoyed, unless you live in a warm area, and it shouldn't be too cold that your skin will freeze in under 30 seconds.
Step2
There are two ways to do this. You can either bring a couple of friends along for safety in numbers. Or, if you do it by yourself you can do one of two things. You can either bring a jacket with a hood, just in case, or do this from your non-convertible car. When I did this I was the only one out there and started to feel like I was in a famous movie having to do with birds.
Step3
If you are doing this from your car, you can break the bread up from inside your car, open the door to toss it out, then close the door again to watch the frenzy. Try to throw enough pieces out there at once so the birds don't fight too much. But a little fighting is inevitable. It's like dealing with the last few pieces of bacon at a Sunday buffet.
Step4
If you want to get bold and feed one by hand then take a good sized piece, at least a 3rd of a slice, and hold it out by hand. Again, this is best to do with either a hooded jacket or from the open door of your car just to reduce the risk of getting ambushed from behind. Observe the video attachment to see how it works. I am no bird expert, but they appear to be more willing to take it out of your hand if you hold it up in the air rather than if you hold it low and expect them to walk towards you.
Step5
When you are done, check your jacket hood and car for "marks" and wash your hands with the sanitizer. Wash them again with soap and water when you get home if you know you came in contact with any of them.

on 12/11/2007 This is great. Around here when the birds start to fly south for winter you can get the same reaction out of any type of bird who is out of their normal feeding area and in search of a free meal. For some reason french fries work wonders...better then bread here. Think they have been in the dumpsters?
