Tips & Warnings:

  • Buy some different size nozzles. On hotter days, you might want to put the bigger ones in for better cooling. On more humid days, you may want the tighter ones.
  • Just beware of those discount sites selling generic systems not designed well for your climate. Buy the wrong system and you will probably not use it very much. Choose a site that has a custom design feature, or good customer service people.

Step1
Choose a high pressure misting system.
Those low pressure mist kits at big box stores won't cut it. They actually just work as mini sprinklers. They cool you by getting you wet! Higher pressure allows much tighter nozzles, which produce more of a drifting fog. The water quickly evaporates into the air, and the evaporation is where the cooling happens. Evaporation actually USES heat from the air. So millions of tiny droplets evaporating into the air results in 35 degrees of patio cooling, or more!
Step2
Get a custom designed system (Its usually free!)
The misting system needs to be designed around your climate and your application. A perfectly designed system will get you the greatest cooling power...without getting patios wet.
If you are in a hotter, drier place, then you would install more nozzles with wider openings. This puts more water into the air, and gets you better cooling. However, if you live in a more humid area, that many nozzles might produce TOO MUCH water, and get everything wet. There are 5 or 6 other important factors too, so get some help. Don't just buy a system off the rack. Or you might just get those mini-sprinklers you were trying to avoid in the first place!
Step3
Install the misting system lines at the right height.
Again, the better web sites and stores will help you to design your system and set the ideal height. Typically. 8 feet is good for average climates. For higher humidity, a 10 foot installation will help get full evaporation.
