Having a college degree can be very rewarding for both your personal accomplishments and your employment opportunities. But what happens when there isn't enough money to pay for college? There are a number of ways to obtain help (financial aid, student loans, grants). But if you have the time you can apply for a scholarship. Here I will tell you how to get help searching for scholarships

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Parent or trusted adult to help you
  • Time
  • Patience
  • Computer
  • Library Card
Step1
Searching for scholarships shouldn't mean that you ignore other forms of receiving financial aid. Go to your school's financial aid office or counselor's office and fill out the financial aid form early.
Step2
Check with your employer or your parents employer to see if they offer any scholarships. Many companies will offer scholarships to children of their employees.
Step3
Ask at your guidance offce. Guidance offices receive a list of scholarships being offered and also have books on how to obtain scholarship and are available for review by students.
Step4
Check with any religious or club organizations that you or your parents may belong to, to see if they offer any scholarships. Check also with the financial aid office of the school you want to attend. They may have available scholarships for new students.
Step5
Go to the library and ask for help on researching scholarships. Most libraries can help you find what you are looking for.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check the internet. Some websites to try are www.fastweb.com, www.collegeboard.org, and www.finaid.org
  • Don't give up. Keep researching and make sure you abide by the deadlines and send all requested information. Not following directions or missing the deadline can take you out of a scholarship where you may have been considered otherwise.
  • KEEP IN MIND THAT MOST SCHOLARSHIPS ARE BASED ON YOUR GRADES, ATHLETICS AND BACKGROUND SO IF YOU ARE IN HIGH SCHOOL TRY TO KEEP YOUR GRADES ABOVE AVERAGE AND JOIN A SPORTS OR EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITY.

on 8/3/2008 Hey, I found out there are some good free scholarships that you can apply for at http://www.scholarship-listings.com

Anyone regardless of age, what you are studying, or what school you go to can qualify. They range from $10k to $50k. I think it's worth checking out!

I applied for all of them yesterday, and I'm hoping I get one! (:

on 6/5/2008 Great article! Most of the scholarships I got were local - I def. recommend starting the end of your junior year or beginning of senior year and applying for all local scholarships you are eligible for. I won a scholarship just because i was the only one who applied.

For tips on how to write a winning scholarship application go to this link. http://www.ehow.com/how_2202993_write-winning-scholarship-applications.html

I would love if you posted a link to your article on my comments section. I think this is a good supplement to what I wrote.
