Tips & Warnings:

  • Go through your cabinets and cleaning supplies to identify anything that has a poison, flammable or caution warning. Call your local recycling center and find out how to dispose of them.
  • Be aware that not all products labeled "natural" or "organic" are safe. The word "natural" is unregulated by the government and can be used on almost anything. "Organic" is only certifiable on food or herbs. Always read labels.

Step1
Read the labels of cleaning products and look for specific, eco-friendly ingredients. Choose products with grain alcohol rather than toxic butyl cellosolve. Look for solvents with fruit or plant oils rather than petroleum (a non-renewable resource).
Step2
Mix your own cleaning solutions. There are many "recipes" for homemade cleaning solvents that clean just as well, or better, than store-bought products. Mix 1 part white vinegar with water to clean windows, for example. Look online at sites such as EarthEasy.com for a list of non-toxic, household ingredients and instructions for use.
Step3
Open your windows or use natural plant-oils or flowers instead of air fresheners, which use aerosol propellants. These have flammable and toxic ingredients as well as tiny particles that get clogged in the lungs. As well, they are often the cause of many allergies and asthma attacks.
Step4
Save on paper waste and air pollutants by using a bagless vacuum with a filter. Clean the filter often to ensure effective use.
Step5
Use chlorine-free bleach as a disinfectant. Chlorine is a very dangerous chemical, especially when it comes in contact with other solvents.
Step6
Conserve water. Turn off the faucet when doing dishes. Wash clothes only when you have a full load and use cold water to save on energy use.
