//Misc Info - Feel Free to Ignore Below

If you want to retrieve files that you have already created and placed on another web server you will first need to connect to that server and retrieve them. If you know how to use a FTP (basically a file manager for the web) program you will want to connect to your host using your login and password (the company you use should have given you this information along with a numeric ip address to use as an address to connect to). Download all the files you would like to transfer. Typically files stored on a host can sit in many folders, the one's normally of interest to people are in a folder called www, or public. If this is not the location of your files contact your host provider. If you do not know how to use an FTP program (like FileZilla or Webdrive) you will have to read an ehow or wait until I write a future article on that area. Webdrive makes FTP'ing as simple as Windows Explorer is in transferring files.

FTP information for other types of users...

Once you connect to your site using Webdrive (or any ftp program - your web browser can even be a ftp program) backup all your data to your computer or somewhere you can find it later. (USB drive is another good place.)

  15. Step 15

Find a new host using a local search engine and look at community forums where they review various hosts. Read my warnings about choosing a host.

  16. Step 16

Connect to your newly acquired host and then copy your files from your PC to your new host. (Contact your host's support number for ftp login information.) If files don't work on your new host contact them and ask them to set your web root folder's files to default permissions for web content.

  17. Step 17

Read the tips below if you are transferring a domain name as well.

on 10/26/2008 This article is a bit dated and references a version of Publisher then may actually you could be using. If the screens do not match your version from the video posted its very likely its a different version.

on 6/22/2007 Make sure to set a password from your domain holder. Example, if you purchase a domain from YAHOO!, under your business account settings, set a user name and password ie use the same on you use to long onto YAHOO! Then when you are doing the .ftp settings and you add, it will ask you for your login and password, and voila!
