Step 1
Almost all punk and metal music use what guitarists call "Power Chords." These chords are generally easy to finger on the guitar fret, but the purpose behind these chords are to give the guitar sound that extra punch.
Use your index finger and ring finger to fret the guitar board. Place the index finger on the second string from the top on the third fret (from the picture on the left you can see the third fret is three columns down from the head of the guitar). Your ring finger should bar the third and fourth string on the fifth fret. The chord being played here is a power chord "C." Now strum the guitar. -
Step 2
Transition your index finger on the first string from the top on the third fret. Your ring finger should bar the second and third string on the fifth fret. This is called a power chord "G." Strum this chord.
-
Step 3
Next have your index finger on the first string from the top on the fifth fret. The ring finger should be barring the second and third strings on the seventh fret. This chord is a power chord "A." Strum this chord.
-
Step 4
Finally, your index finger should be on the first string on the first fret. The ring finger should be barring the second and third strings on the third fret. This is called the power chord "F." Now strum.
-
Step 5
Keep strumming these chords sequentially from step 1 to 4 and now you're playing "Dammit" by Blink-182!

on 3/21/2008 Cool instructional video, Rich. My son is addicted to his guitar. Just got 3rd place in his school's talent show playing and singing a song he wrote. I'll have to show him your article. He'll enjoy it.
