How to Start a Jet Engine

Video Preview

Summary: Have you ever wondered if starting a jet airliner is as simple as turning a key? Well, here is a brief description of how to start a jet engine. Every aircraft and engine type may be slightly different, but this will give you the general idea for most jet engines (other than the new bleed less engines to be used on the new Boeing 787).

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

A standard jet engine required a high pressure airflow to start the fan turning. This is usually generated by the Auxillary Power Unit (APU) of the aircraft. In some cases, an external source of air can be used. This is what is referred to as an "air start".

First things fist, start the APU by selecting APU switch to start on the overhead panel.

  2. Step 2

Monitor the APU gauges until the readings are stabilized. Turn the APU bleed switch to the on (down) position, and turn the left and right pack switches to the off position. Monitor the pressure gauge and ensure at least 30 psi.

  3. Step 3

Switch the engine start knob to 'GND'. This will start the engine rotating.

  4. Step 4

Monitor the N2 engine gauge and wait until it reaches 25%.

  5. Step 5

Then move the fuel flow lever from cut off to the idle Detent. This introduces fuel to the engine. When N2 reaches 46% the Engine Start Switch will move to the off position automatically.

  6. Step 6

You have now successfully started your first engine. Repeat the process with any remaining engines.
