How to Make Sun Tea

Capture summer in a jar by brewing tea in the warmth of the sun.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Choose a clear glass jar that can hold the amount of tea you want to make and has a working lid.
Step2
Fill the jar with cold water.
Step3
Select your tea - either bags or loose tea. Four tea bags or 4 tsp. tea will make 4 c. of sun tea.
Step4
For loose tea, either use a tea ball, tie the tea up in a little cheesecloth, or decide not to use anything (which means you'll have to strain the tea).
Step5
Put the tea bags or loose tea in the water. Close the lid.
Step6
Set the jar in the sun.
Step7
In an hour, check the tea's strength and color. If you used loose tea without a container, strain the tea.
Step8
Pour over ice and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add lemon, lime and simple syrup - made with two parts water to one part sugar and boiled - or mint to taste. (You can add granulated sugar instead of syrup, but it doesn't dissolve as well.)
  • If you leave tea bags in the water too long, the tea will be bitter.

on 10/4/2008 I mix-up my tea bags: I use half raspberry or orange tea bags with the green tea bags for a different taste. So-oo-oo-oo goo-oo-oo-ood! Just experiment - what have ya got to lose? I also like mine a wee bit stronger so I leave it in the sun for up to 2 hrs.

If you're like me and live where the sun doesn't shine everyday you can also make it indoors. I just put the jar on the windowsill or countertop and have at it! It takes a little longer but it's still tasty!

on 5/31/2008 This tea is so good. I loved it. I don't think you need that many tea bags though. With that many it didn't taste pleasent.

on 7/27/2006 Be very careful. You may be brewing trouble. Bacteria may grow in the tea.
