I am Dr. Jeffrey Levy , house call vet NYC. And this is why do cats clean themselves after they eat? As a practicing veterinarian and a part-time animal behaviorist I'm often fascinated at the way my cat Austi grooms himself after he eats. Cats clean themselves for three reasons. Number one is relaxation. As they groom themselves their heart rate lowers, they relax and go towards sleep. This allows the body to put its effort into digestion. Another reason cats groom themselves is for sanitary reasons. They are removing food particles from their coat which could lead to disease and attract parasites. A third reason is cats are performing grooming rituals that keep the coat neat and tidy and lead to better thermal regulation. Knowing why cats groom themselves after eat might satisfy our own curiosity.
