Hi, my name is Luke, and this is how to format a hard drive but leave some files. If you'd like to format a hard drive, the entire hard drive, it's impossible to leave any files. Formatting a hard drive destroys and then recreates the file system on the hard drive, but there are techniques you can use to format certain partitions of a hard drive while still keeping some of the files. Using a program that's free for download off the internet called Partition Wizard Home Edition, you can view and see different partitions on a hard drive. If you'd like to leave some files in one partition, you can still format other partitions on the hard drive. However, if you format the entire hard drive, all the data will be deleted. to format only certain partitions and leave files on the other, select the drive and the partition in question and then you can select delete. This will format or delete and give you unallocated space. You can then reformat the unallocated space and all the files will remain in the other partition. And that's it.
