Hi, I'm Bill Sheehan. Do fish feed during freezing temperatures? This question is mostly asked by people who have ponds outdoors. Fish like these tropical fish rarely ever go below 70 and would die at those temperatures. As far as pond fish go, when the temperature drops below 40, 45 degrees and their metabolism slows, their heart rate slows, they kind of go in to a dormant hibernation phase. At this period you never want to feed, you never want to offer any kind of food it's only going to pollute the water because the bacteria in there is also going dormant, nothing is breaking down the waste and you'll create ammonia in the water and actually kill the fish. So the best thing to do all winter is leave those fish alone.
