Hi, I'm Dan Weisenberger and this is how is a coenzyme important for an enzyme's function. Well there are certain enzymes that cannot function alone and they need help and we call those helpers coenzymes and that is shown here in this diagram in which the enzyme alone is called the apoenzyme and that interacts with the coenzyme to form a holoenzyme and holoenzymes are then able to perform catalysis. Now what are examples of coenzymes in biology? Well they are the NAD and FAD, nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide which are involved in electron transport and get oxidized and reduced to facilitate enzyme catalyzed reactions, quinones are also involved in electron transfer, specific vitamins are also needed for specific enzyme catalyses, magnesium ions bind through ionic bonding to the substrate or enzyme part of that complex to facilitate enzyme function and finally, hormones can bind to their receptor and this is the only way to induce enzyme receptor activity is in the presence of hormone.
