My name is Susan Combs and today we're going to talk about obesity and health insurance. In terms of obesity and health insurance, as of 2014 with the Affordable Care Act, there's going to be some other bells and whistles that are added in there. Up to this point, there's a lot of carriers out there that will cover things for obesity. So they will cover things such as weight loss programs they might offer a discount through or if there is a medical drug that's supposed to help lower your weight or sometimes some carriers even cover bariatric surgery. So as of 2014, those things will probably continue but also as preventative care is covered now at 100% they are throwing obesity into the mix. So prescreening for obesity and things like that they are wanting to cover that for preventative care because there has been studies that have shown that if you are classified as obese, which is classified as 35 pounds over the weight limit for your height and age, that on average you spend $1,400 more in medical bills a year. So they are wanting to kind of try to nip that in the bud and see if they can make a healthier population so that ultimately the health insurance rates are going to go down.
