Hi, I'm Robin Higgins and this is what is the chemical equation for reacting ethanol with formic acid. Alright so lets take a look at our reagents. First of all ethanol, pretty simple there. We got our ethane plus pour alcohol and the chemical equation for that is C2,1,2, H, 1,2,3,4,5,6, and a single O. Now lets look at formic acid. So formic acid is the smallest of carboxylic acids. It just has a little aldehyde here and his chemical equation is C and we have 1,2 H's and we have 1,2 oxygen's. Alright so when these 2 things react they form water H2O and the main product is actually something called ethyl formate so we have our aldehyde portion here and then we have our ethanol attachment here. So you can see what we did basically is attach this ethanol into the carbonyl and it displaced the OH which left us water and now we have our product named ethyl formate.
