Hi, my name is Marija, and today I'm going to show you how to do subtraction. So at the elementary level, subtraction is known as take away and the words take away really help the kids get a visual of what it means to subtract so when first introducing subtraction, I would definitely do it with something physical so whether the kids have money or a certain object in front of them if we have the subtraction problem 7 minus 3 you would start with either drawing 7 things or giving them 7 things that they can physically have in front of them and then teaching them that this part right here means to take away 3. So whatever 7 things, 7 objects you put in front of them, you're going to ask the child to take away 3. So once they physically take away 3 of the objects in front of them they can count the remainder and when they do that they will see that they have 4. Once the physical part of it is done and you have them memorizing their subtraction facts, you're going to have to do subtractions such as 35 minus 8. So now we are getting into the subtraction of two digit numbers minus one digit number. So this is where you are going to have to learn that when you get into a situation like this where you have 5 minus 8 and you can't do it, you're going to have to borrow from the number in the 10s digit. So we change the 5 into a 15 and we change the 3 into a 2. So we borrowed 1 and we made it a 2. Now you can subtract, 15 minus 8 is 7 and 2 minus the 0 that's really here is 2 and 35 minus 8 is 27 and that is how you do subtraction.
