Hi, my name is Marija, and today I'm gonna show you how to work out a times problem with 3 digits by 2 digits. So we'll take a 3 digit number like 345 and we'll multiply it by a 2 digit number like 27. Alright, so the first thing that you're gonna do is take the number that is in the 1's place in the bottom which is our 7 and we're gonna multiply by each number that's in the 3 digit number. Okay, so we're gonna start with the 5, 7 times 5 is 35. The 5's gonna come down here and we're gonna carry the 3. Then we're gonna do 7 times 4 is 28 and we're gonna add that 3 to get 31 so the 1 comes down here and the 3 gets carried, 7 times 3 is 21 and 21 plus 3 is 24. Now that I'm done multiplying by the 7 I'm gonna go ahead and cross out the numbers that I carried so they don't confuse me later. So no before I start multiplying by the 2 I have to remember that every second line has to start with a 0. Okay, it start with a 0 because this 2 is actually a 20 right this is actually 20 plus 7. So we're accounting for that by putting a 0 down here and now we're gonna follow the same process with the 2. The 2 is gonna get multiplied by each number up here. So 2 times 5 is 10. My 0 comes down, my 1 gets carried, 2 times 4 is 8 and 8 plus 1 is 9, 2 times 3 is 6 and now that I have my 2 lines and I'm done with all the multiplication I have to add these 2 lines. It's very important that you're neat when you're doing the multiplication so that your numbers are lined up for when we're ready to add. So now we're gonna go ahead and add, 5 plus 0 is 5, 1 plus 0 is 1, 9 plus 4 is 13 so we're putting that 3 down here and we're carrying the 1, 6 plus 2 is 8 plus 1 is 9 and then we're gonna count 1,2,3 numbers and put your comma where it belongs so that we get 345 times 27 equals 9315 and that is how you multiply a 3 digit number by a 2 digit number.
