Hi. My name is Marija, and today I'm going to show you some math activities that teach the place of a number. So students have a difficult time sometimes understanding which is greater, .01 or .001. So in order to teach them about the place value one thing that you can do is come up with a card game that's like a decimal spades. So you have to make cards and you can give each child a set or hand them about 7 cards and each one would have a decimal on it. So let's say one student has a .05 card and then they also have .5 and so on and so forth. They might have a .8. What you're doing is if they have 4 kids in a group you have each child place one card down and the child that goes next has to place a higher card. So of course in order for them to win the game they need to understand that if the card that's placed down is a .05 then either of these two cards would be higher than that. So once you've already taught them place value this is a great way to reinforce which numbers are higher than others in decimal form. And then if of course it they're doing it correctly they'll win the game because they'll have all the higher cards. This is one activity that you can do to teach place value.
