Hi, I'm Ryan Ault. I'm a physicist and this is how to solve for y in a right triangle. Here we have a right triangle drawn and we see that it has three sides, x, y, and c. Now using the Pythagorean theorem, we can say the hypotenuse squared, c squared is equal to x squared plus y squared. Solving for y we find c squared minus x squared is equal to y squared. Now we can square root both sides and find that y equals plus or minus the square root of c squared minus x squared. Now we can ignore the negative term because we're only looking at positive length. And we find y is equal to the square root of c squared minus x squared. I'm Ryan Ault and this is how to solve for y in a right triangle.
