Hi, I'm Rachel Kaplove, and today we're going to be going over how to teach perimeter to first graders. First graders, it's gonna be hard to teach them the actual formula, like, you know, formula for a perimeter is 2L plus 2W for a rectangle. So instead, have them think of it like a fence. The fence of this enclosed area, which is a rectangle, or a square if you look at it, it's probably a rectangle, you just have them count up the sides as if they were a fence that went all the way around this rectangle. So, say this part is seven, let's call this six, this is seven and this is six. You have them add up this side, seven, plus six, plus seven, plus six. It's not an area, which would be all this space. That's not fencing, fencing is something that goes all the way around. It doesn't include the space in the middle. So that's how they can identify the perimeter of the shape. I'm Rachel, and thanks for learning with us today.
