Hello, my name is Polina Roytman, and I'm a costume designer and fashion stylist. And today are at Mary Myer Clothing Boutique in Brooklyn, New York and the question I'm going to answer is: How do you shrink clothes? Now there's, it's a trick question in a way because it's not one thing for all clothes, it depends on the fabric, it depends if it's delicate. Some things you can't shrink, some things you shouldn't because if you try they're going to get ruined, such as silk. But in this particular case I'm going to tell you how to shrink a wool sweater. Now that can also get tricky because you can shrink it too much, you can shrink it too little, depending on what you want. Now the sweater that my model is wearing actually used to be down to her hips. What we did is we washed it in warm water and we laid it flat to dry and now it fits a lot better and I think she looks great. If say you were to wash it in hot water I don't recommend it. I say do it gradually because hot water can shrink it a bit too much and then it almost gets kind of stiff and not very comfortable to wear. If you put it in the dryer, especially, for too long, the same thing can happen. Cotton though is different. For cotton you would also put it in the wash, hot water, the hottest you can get. And then if you want to shrink it further you can put it in the dryer on the hottest setting that you can get. But for this particular wool sweater just warm water and you could do it little by little gradually. And I just answered how to shrink clothes. Thank you for listening.
