How to Xeriscape a Yard With No Grass

Hello. Thomas Lowe here. I'm a landscape designer in Atlanta, Georgia. Today I'll be giving you some tips on how to xeriscape your landscape without using grass. What xeriscaping is is using little to no water in your landscape. Long grasses take up a lot of water depending on what part of the United States that you live in, also depending on what type of long grass. So instead of using a grass what you can use in these utility areas or play areas, is artificial grass that's sold now. Or you can use decorative wood chips or decorative gravel. And the decorative gravel can be used in different types of patterns, in curved patterns, in transition blend patterns and different colors of gravel do really well for blending as well. Also, you may want to create large areas of ground covers for xeriscaping because ground covers do require a little bit of water the first year or two. But over the long haul they don't require as much water as a lawn does and at some point very little to no water, just the natural rainfall. Those types of plants could be English ivy, Mondo grass, Leario ice plant. Those are a lot of really good low growing ground covers that will take up space without getting too large. Also you can use and design in your xeriscaping wide paths that narrow out to smaller paths that create pockets, sort of pockets of sitting areas and pathways that form a circle over the area of your design. Those can be used as walking paths in utility areas. When the path becomes wider those utility areas could be sitting areas, play areas. And those paths can be mulched over or graveled over or even put in some artificial grass as well. Right behind me there is some natural type of grasses. This is Miscanthus grass, and the Miscanthus grass is very drought tolerant and it requires very little to no water. And that is used a lot in xeriscaping as well. So a lot of drought tolerant plants like Miscanthus grass Pampus grass, and a lot of smaller Pennisetum grasses are great for xeriscaping as well. You can use blends of sand, gray sand, white sand in pockets around your landscape design. And then also boulders you can use as well. So if you're thinking about xeriscaping without grass, but you want those play and utility areas, decorative gravel, wood chips, and then artificial grass is great to use that doesn't require any water.
