How to Detassel Corn

Hi, I'm Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson at tecathompson.com. And today, we're talking about how to detassel corn. So, this is the tassel of the corn and what the tassel does is it pollinates the silks of the corn. So, why would you want to detassel is if you wanted to cross pollinate the corn. So, I'm going to detassel this, but this one was technically had been gone too, had been left too far. So, you want to detassel the corn before the silk starts to form and dry. So, you're just going to take the tassel in your hand and you're just going to break it off, like this, right above the last leaf. And then, you can compost or throw this away. So, you wouldn't want to detassel your corn unless you would have some other way of pollinating it or you had corn growing beside it that was a different variety that you would, that would cross pollinate it. Otherwise, it would have no way of pollinating and then the little kernels won't form and then you won't have beautiful heads of corn. I'm Farm to Table Chef Teca Thompson at tecathompson.com.
