Hi, my name is Christina Gavenda with domesticfelicity.com, and today we're going to talk about how to identify inappropriate touch to a toddler. Every toddler develops their communications skills at a different pace. Some toddlers you might be able to clearly explain this to them and some they may not be ready for it. However you can set the foundation for safety by making sure you know who cares for your child. Having a short list of people who care for your child in intimate ways like changing their diaper or being left alone with them will drastically reduce your risk of them being touched in an inappropriate way. This way you can also say to your toddler, in ways that wont frighten them, that if someone touches them in certain areas when they're not being wiped because they went to the bathroom or having their pants pulled up from going to the bathroom, that that person may have touched them in an inappropriate way. And you can tell them that only during those times can people touch you. Or only these certain people who perform those tasks for you, like changing your diaper. You can use a doll to help demonstrate this. Be sure to keep it on their level and not fear inducing. You can let them know that if anyone besides, maybe their grandparents, or you or their father, touches them then that's inappropriate touch in this area. You want to make sure that you use correct words. If you don't feel comfortable teaching your child correct body part words you could use the word pee-pee which is easily recognizable by other people to know exactly what you mean. You don't want to use silly words like "john" because then people might not know exactly what the child is talking about. You want them to be able to be clearly understood if something really has happened. Those are just a couple tips. Remember to keep it simple with your child. Be clear, have a couple of clear rules. Know who is taking care of your child. And also, be sure to not induce fear.
