Hi, my name is Aimee Gilbreath. I'm the executive director of The Found Animals Foundation in Los Angeles and I'm here today to answer your questions about the qualities of the Black Labrador Retriever. Labrador Retrievers, based on breed registrations, have been the most popular dog in the United States since 1991. Labrador Retrievers come in three colors and all three colors are actually the exact same dog and puppies from one litter can have all three colors. So they come in the black, what's called a Yellow Lab, and that can range in color anywhere from nearly white to creamy and then the chocolate which is a brown color. Labrador Retrievers were originally bred as hunting dogs and in particular to help retrieve water fowl who had been shot and landed in water. So they're incredibly athletic with a lot of drive and stamina and they even have webbed feet to help them swim and retrieve things like ducks out of the water. The result of this is that the Labrador Retriever is a very high energy dog. So, if you buy or adopt a Labrador Retriever, things like tennis balls and Frisbees are going to be your best friend because your lab is going to need a lot of exercise especially in its younger years. Labs are highly intelligent and very loyal. They make great family pets.
