My name is Susan Combs and I'm an insurance broker for Combs and Company. Today, we're going to talk about how to collect disability insurance. So disability insurance it will really actually depend on where you got the coverage. So if you are looking at say to go out on claim for disability and we're talking about the, you know the state and the federal disability, you know it's going to be different requirements as if you were to go out on disability on a private carrier. So you know the best thing to do is you know, if it's, you know a private carrier and you are looking at say your employee benefits, you know each contract is going to be written very very different just like if you were to go out and as an individual purchase a disability policy, there might be a line item in there that says you know, own occupation which is you know, usually more expensive insurance but that's what you want to get typically or if it doesn't say own occupation then the disability will only pay out if you are unable to do any type of work so if you were a dentist and you are still able to say you know work at a diner and be, you know a waiter then your policy wouldn't pay out but if you have in there that it's an own occupation and you are a dentist and you are unable to be a dentist because of a damage to your hand or something like that then your disability policy would pay out. So the main thing is you need to really talk to your broker and really have them explain the disability policy that you are looking at buying and understand that the one that you are getting because like I said there can be a lot of different details in there and you want to make sure that God forbid something happens and you need to go out on claim that you are not going to have any troubles in collecting on your disability policy.
