My name is Susan Combs and I'm an insurance broker for Combs and Company. Today, we're going to talk about what states require PIP insurance. So PIP insurance, PIP stands for personal injury protection. So you know this is also known as no fault insurance so typically if there is a vehicle accident and it's not your fault so say there is a hit and run or something like that, then that's the type of insurance that you are looking to have. There's some states out there, there's actually 12 states as well as the District of Colombia that require you to have this coverage in place. So just to name a few, you know, Kentucky, Kansas, New Jersey, you know New York, those states all require you to have PIP insurance. The one thing about PIP insurance is that you know if you were to put in a claim it actually does not increase your premium because it was, you know, it was an accident that was not your fault. So you don't have to worry about points going on your license, you don't have to worry about your premiums going up. Like I said there's, you know, 12 states in Washington, DC that have this as part of the requirements for their state for auto insurance so you need to be familiar with your state laws so the best thing to do is to talk to an insurance broker that handles auto insurance in your state and they'll be able to navigate you through this system.
