How to Measure the Effectiveness of a Storm Window

Hi, this is Rick Koller, the Chief Operations Officer for Criterium-Tauscher Cronacher Professional Engineers. Today, we want to talk about how measure the effectiveness of a storm window. In the old days we had what was called a single pane window and a lot of us had an extra storm window that we could put on or take off as well as having a screen. Today if you've had those windows replaced with any kind of replacement window, this now is your storm window. It's a double pained window. This is called a casement window. It opens and closes like this as opposed to a double hung window which is one that slides up and down. But either way if it's a replacement window there's 2 panes of glass in here and there's gas or air in between them and that is what gives you the thermal protection and the protection from the elements as well as the insulation that a replacement window will give you. Now in the event that you're noticing that your window has condensation in it or that it's becoming foggy and it's not clear and you can't see through it then that means that the window has failed and somehow we've got a break in between the 2 panes. It may not even be visible it might be something on the seal and unfortunately the only way to fix that is to have the window removed and to replace it with a new double pane window.
