How to Maintain Emergency Lighting Systems

Hi, I'm Rick Koller, the chief operations officer of Criterium-Tauscher Cronacher Professional Engineers. We're going to talk now about how to maintain emergency lighting systems. Obviously the basic things that you can do is install flashlights in your utility closets and in places where you know they are going to be in the event that we've got a blackout or a power shortage. It's a good idea to keep a backup battery powered light in your emergency supply closet. Another option is a plugin rechargeable flashlight. This is a Lithium powered flashlight that when the power goes off, the battery pack automatically has this flashlight ready to go. Some of them even have a safety lighting on it so that when it's dark it will light up and allow you to find exactly where that flashlight is plugged in. The other things that you can do is spend a little bit more money and invest in a generator so that when the power does go off, the generator will then back you up and pick up the power to provide you with the electric backup that you'll need. Some generators are automatically hooked up to the house with natural gas. Some of them like this one in front of me is a portable generator and it requires you to fill it with gas. The important things to remember when using a generator is to make sure that wherever you are using it because it will kick off carbon monoxide is to keep it away from any air intake into the house such as open vents, dryer vents, an air conditioner or heating unit that sucks in the air from the outside and heats it or cools it. So when you are operating it, just keep it a safe distance away from the house so that any of that byproduct can dissipate. This is Rick Koller.
