Hi, I'm Rick Koller, the chief operations officer of Crieterium-Tauscher Cronacher Professional Engineers. Today, we're here to talk to you about leaking basement solutions. Since roughly 90 percent of all of water leaking into the basement is due to clogged gutters or clogged leaders, what we wanted to show you here is an example of what you can do to prevent this from happening. In this example the leader is not connected to the dry well which is a basin that sits underneath this concrete and collects the water. So when the rain comes down this leader, it piles up here on the concrete and then through the cracks around the foundation of the house, water can seep into the basement. So what we want to do is two things one is make sure the connection of the leader goes into the dry well effectively and then also when we have heavy rains come out here and make sure that water isn't pouring out of this dry well and then going into the crackers. Some of the other minor things that we can do is make sure that the grading of the ground around the foundation is moving away from the house and not towards the house. In this example, since the concrete pad here is actually collecting water, you can see that what the client has done is put a waterproofing membrane on top of it. It won't guarantee that water doesn't seep into the basement but it will help prevent some water from seeping into the cracks.
