My name is Robert Weeks. I'm a mixed martial artist. Today, I'm at Main Event Sports Club and I'm going to teach you proper etiquette of a Tatami room. Whenever you step on or off the Tatami, you always want to show a sign of gesture of respect and thanks. In doing so, you will bow, you will remove your socks and shoes. Not only does this respect and prevent damage but it also gives you a better grip to the mat. Bowing to the Tatami instills that your attitude is that of respect and harmony. It holds a literal importance for your and your partner so you guys can both enjoy a mutual benefit of this practice. The method of sitting in Japanese marital arts is called seiza. This must be done properly to both observe etiquette and prevent damage to legs and knees. Although bowing to a straw mat sounds strange at first, remember that in Japanese martial arts, the tools of practice share the same importance as teachers or students and that is the proper etiquette for a Tatami room.
