Hi, I'm Angela Price from Eden Condensed, Small Space Garden Design.Today, I'm going to show you how to germinate and plant tomatoes using planting cubes. And you can buy these at your nursery center or Big Box home store and they actually come in a couple of different pieces. So, you'll have a base tray here and this is all made out of recycled plastic, which is nice. You'll have your cube system here and this one happens to come in eight different sections here. So, you can actually pull them apart, which is also great. And if you'll notice, they've got holes in the bottom for drainage, and you'll set that inside the base. And depending on how many plants you want to germinate, you can start with some of them, you can do the whole thing. And there's a couple of different ways that you can put soil in these, you can use these little pellets, which are made out of coconut fiber. And you soak these in water and they expand to about, I don't know, like a 10, 20 times their size and then, you can pop those into the cubes. These are a little bit big for this size cubes. So, what I'm going to use today, is just some nice organic potting soil, because it is what the plants also like. So, you'll want to fill your cubes up and get them up you know, almost to the top, don't worry about being super neat here, this is gardening. And plant as many as you're going to plant. The key is doing, seed cubes here, is to keep the cubes evenly moist. So, I'm going to do that by using a household sprayer with water in it, and you'll want to kind of spritz it and give it a couple minutes for the water to sink and then, spritz it one more time. And then, the most important part here, is putting your seeds in, I'm using Black Krim organic tomato seeds here, because I happen to like those tomatoes. But any tomato variety you want to use, is great. These little seeds are really tiny, so you're going to have to shake them out on your palm here and you can, I know some people use tweezers. I would say, put two to three seeds into each cube, right on the surface, to get the, so they're spread out a little bit. And then, just push them down a little bit with your finger and just make sure that they're covered over with the potting soil, you don't want to leave them open to the elements. And your soil already should be moist form spritzing it originally. And then, the great thing about this is, that it comes with a little clear top. And basically what you're doing is, you're creating your own, little mini greenhouse here. Which will provide moisture inside as well as warmth, in order to germinate your tomato plants. Now, you want to keep this in bright light, but not direct sunlight, direct sunlight will cause it to heat up too much and it'll kill the tomato seeds. So, if you have, if you're going to do this indoors, if you have a florescent under counter light in your kitchen. If you happen to be lucky enough to have a grow light, that's great. Or, keep it in a sunny window that doesn't get super hot, direct sunlight. You may also need to turn this around a couple times during the day, just to make sure that everything gets sun on either, every side. Lastly, you want to do, is probably every couple of days, is just check the moisture level. If it feels dry, give it a couple more spritzes and then, cover it up. And then, once the plants start to sprout, which takes anywhere between 10 and 20 days, depending on the variety of seed that you're putting in. Then, you'll want to remove the cover.
