How to Make Custom Designer Keys

Hi, I'm Linda Hutchinson. Today, I'm going to show you how you can make custom designer key. A lot of times it's helpful to color code your keys so you can remember which one is which. You can get those little rubber things in the hardware store. But they tend to slide off a lot and they're not very interesting looking. You can paint your keys but they tend to chip as they rub against each other. This is another option that's cheap and kind of cool to look at on your keychain. You just take some duct tape. It's available nowadays in all kinds of colors and patterns. I'm using some black and white zebra stripe here but you can use whatever kind you prefer. So I'm just bending it over on the key, pressing it down very well. Now you only want to put it on the top part. Not where the mechanics of the key it because that will interfere with your usage. So now you press it down really well, get out any air bubbles or whatever. Then use an X-Acto knife. Now I don't recommend this for kids be very careful. You take the X-Acto knife and you trade along the outside. You can feel along the outside of the key and you trace along it. I'm doing this on a self healing mat. You don't want to do this directly on your furniture. Again these kinds of mats are available in the craft store. They're great for all kinds of crafts. Good protective surface. So now I'm tracing the edge of the key, removing the excess tape. Like that. Going to go down here. When I folded it over it didn't meet up exactly so I'll just trace off the excess. No problem. Now to be able to put this on a keyring you need to punch out the hole. If you just slip the key in your pocket this is fine. If you want to put it on a keyring you just use your X-Acto knife to carve out the tape where the hole is on either side of the key. And depending on how much time you put in to this you can get it very, very precise. I wouldn't worry about being too precise though because you really won't see the edges once the keyring is in there. And there you have a custom designer key that you can easily identify from all your other keys. You can use different color tapes or different pattern tapes for the various keys. And there's a quick and easy way to have a custom designer key very cheaply. My name is Linda Hutchinson, thank you so much for joining me. Bye bye.
