Hi. I'm Lindsay Hair, and interior designer in New York City and founder of Linden Blue E Design, your online decorating resource. Decorating apartments has become second nature to me after living in New York for many years. But if you find yourself downsizing to an apartment you're probably starting to realize that adjustments to your decor will need to be made. Largely because not all of your furniture is going to fit. You may have to be creative with how you fulfill the functional needs of your space withing smaller boundaries. So let me give you a few tips to get started. First dining room chairs ofter present a problem when downsizing. Because a table that can seat twelve can easily get smaller by removing the leaves. But what do you do with all of those chairs? If space allows flanking them on a consul in your apartment is a great solution. Not only do you create interesting vignettes as potential focal points, but you keep the extra chairs out of the way yet still in reach when you need to pull them up. Next, cabinets are pieces of furniture that are often quite crucial in apartments with a limited amount of storage space. By placing your cabinet under a wall mounted TV not only have you given yourself a little extra surface space, but you've also found a solution for storing our AV equipment. Lastly, living room seating can often be challenging in an apartment. Sectional sofas and over-sized club chairs are an apartment nightmare. Not only due to elevator and hallway accessibility but any pieces with over-sized dimensions are going to be tough to place in an apartment. So consider this alternative. Rather than having multiple club chairs, consider using smaller benches.The smaller size makes them great for moving around the apartment, yet they are big enough to keep in the main seating area when entertaining requires an extra seat or two.
