How to Do Makeup for a Children's Ballet

Not all makeup styles are going to be appropriate for something like children's ballet. Do makeup for a children's ballet with help from an experienced ballet professional in this free video clip.

Hi, I'm Cary Petrusek with Evergreen Dance Center, and I'm here to show you how to apply makeup for a children's ballet recital. The first thing that you're going to need is eye makeup. So I have an eye pencil, an eye shadow brush, an eye shadow and then a mascara. The second thing that you're going to need is blush. I've got a rose colored blush here and a nice size brush to apply it and the last thing you're going to need is lipstick and hopefully it can be any kind of a darker color that can help bring out the lips. Most of the time when you are in special lighting for the show, it's very very bright and it tends to make the dancer's face look very pale. So for a child really we don't care too much about foundation but more about color. So the main items that we are going to need are eye shadow, blushes and lipsticks. So now let's learn how to apply it. Alright first off I'm going to start with applying the eye makeup. I've got a little eyeliner here and I just want to put a very small thin line at the base of the eye, try and keep it as close to the lid as possible. Second, we're going to use the eye shadow. You're going to come in here, the best thing I think to use is an eye shadow brush and you're going to also put it down at the base of the eye right in the crevice and then extend down to the end. You don't want it to go too far up the eyelid. Excellent, that way it kind of accentuates the eye and makes it able to be seen all the way from the audience. The last thing we're going to do is mascara and you want to be heavy handed with your makeup for stage. It's not the same as doing your makeup for every day. There we go. The second thing we want to do is blush. So like I said we've got a rose colored blush here. It's actually got three different colors depending on your child's complexion and you want to go ahead and take it from the base right along the cheekbone all the way up and like I said a little heavy handed because the stage lights do wash out color. There you go. And the last thing that we're going to want to do is lipstick and like I said before, I want a dark lipstick. Any kind of very light pink it's not going to show up at all on stage. Then if you would like, you can do a little foundation but for children, it's not absolutely necessary. The main thing we want to do is make sure that they have enough color on their face. But if you do you can blend the powder on top, there you go. And that's pretty much all that you'll need for a child's makeup. As long as you have color on the eyes, the cheeks and the lips.
