How to Multiply Succulents

Hi. I'm garden designer Angela Price from Eden Condensed Small Space Garden Design. Succulents are really popular in the garden right now. And one of the things I want to show you how to do is how to multiply your investment of succulents. So I actually have this old pot here that I've had in my yard sitting on a table for several years and it's gotten a little leggy and a little stringy. One of the great things about succulents thought is that they hold root cells in both their stems and their leaves. So they're really easy to multiply. There's a couple of different ways that you can do it. I have some started here in a little container. But we're going to take one of these off of this guy here and I'll show you how to multiply it and start a new plant. So the first thing you want to do is put on your gardening gloves to protect your hands. I have some potting soil here that's especially meant for succulents or cactus. You can use this indoors and out. What the cactus soil does is that it actually provides a lot of drainage. Succulents don't like to be sitting in water so they'll get rotted out. And I'm going to take my herb snips here because these are nice and sharp. And you want to look down where the leaves are in one of these kind of older ones and you'll see little bumps that are coming out here. And just snip it off, a nice clean snip. You can pull off some of the leaves here too but hold on to these because you can actually sprout these as well. So I'm going to pull a couple off so that way we can have a nice good inch. Now the first thing you want to do is give this about twenty four hours to dry out. So you'll see here it's nice and moist because I just pulled it off the plant. Give it about twenty four hours to dry out. You don't need to put it in direct sun, just leave it on a plate in a dry room and it should kind of dry over really nicely. This one here I pulled off about twenty four hours ago so it's kind of dried out. And then what I'm going to do is I'm going to take some rooting powder. And this powder is especially made to root plants and it will help give nutrients to the plant to grow roots. And all you have to do is just shake a little bit out in the cap or in a dish, take the succulent and in the areas that you cut whether you pulled off a couple of leaves or just on the stem, is just give it a nice good coating here. And then gently push the stem into the soil. Now it may take a couple of weeks for it to root, and here I've got a couple here that I've rooted. And you could see that they've already started sprouting roots. And once they start sprouting roots then you can transplant them into the container where you want to grow them. Another thing you can do is with the leaves, if you lose a couple of the leaves here which happens sometimes when you're moving succulents, you can actually dip the end of the leaves into the rooting powder and then just lay them on some succulent soil and make sure that they're placed in filtered light. You don't want to keep succulents in direct sunlight. And maybe every seven to ten days with a spritzer bottle just give the dirt, not the succulent itself, a little spritz just so it does have a little bit of water and then let the soil drain out and dry out completely.
