How to Landscape a Small Garden

Landscaping a small garden is a really great design opportunity that shouldn't be taken for granted. Landscape a small garden with help from the owner of Eden Condensed, small space garden design in Los Angeles, California, in this free video clip.

Hi. I'm garden designer Angela Price with Eden Condensed Small Space Garden Design. I love designing gardens using small spaces and flower beds because you can really plant it in an intense way and make a really nice impact. I like this bed a lot because it uses a lot of different plants, but it also uses plants that are drought resistant that are great for both full and part sun environments and that are kind of study too. That they'll take on dogs walking through it, people walking through it. You need to take a look at the environment of your garden and see if it's going to get foot traffic or there are kids playing around and how you do that. One of the things when you're designing in a small space though is to make sure that you put all your plants out before you put them into the ground and make sure that you have the right proportions. When you're at the nursery center picking plants out always make sure that you look to see how high and how wide a plant is going to get. Because somethings this big in a pot when you first get it, it may end up to be this big in about six months and crowd out other plants. And then you'll end up having to pull things up or it might cut the sun off from something else and that other plant will die. What's nice about this garden is that you do have some variations of plants. You've got some roses, agapanthus, lavender, geranium. And these plants will also come into flower at different times during the year. And that's something else to consider in a small space, is if you want flowers and color, what kind of colors do you want, and when are those plants going to be blooming. Your roses here will bloom maybe two or three times during the year, in the spring and maybe twice in the summer depending on the variety. The agapanthus will bloom in the spring. Lavender blooms usually in the summer although these do have some blooms on them right now. Geraniums I find bloom all year around. So that way you've got a succession of blooms during the year. Also make sure that when you put in flowers in a small bed or in a small yard, that your taller plants go to the back of the bed and the smaller ones go to the front of the bed. So that way your plants aren't crowding themselves out and you can actually see everything that you've planted.
