Hello, I’m Dr. Cindy Roark, chief clinical director of Coast Dental. Today, I’m going to talk about how to use mouthwash. Mouthwashes are used for a variety of reasons. They can freshen your breath. They can help prevent gingivitis, which is the first stage of gum disease. They can help reduce plaque, and they can help prevent tooth decay. First, you need to choose the right mouthwash for you. There are medicated mouthwashes which your dentist can provide, and there are over-the-counter mouthwashes. They serve different functions, so ask your dentist which one is the best for you. Also, check to see if there are any age restrictions. Most mouthwashes are not recommended for young children. Before you use any mouthwash, you want to first brush and floss your teeth. Then, swish the recommended amount of mouthwash in your mouth with your lips closed, typically for about 30 seconds. Check the label to see if the manufacturer has a different recommended amount of time. Spit all the mouthwash out, rinse your mouth with water unless the directions on the mouthwash recommend different. For instance, fluorides generally are not meant to be rinsed. Then, wait a half hour before eating or drinking anything. Thank you for watching. I’m Dr. Cindy Roark with Coast Dental.
