Hello, I'm Kevin Lynch, assistant professor of insurance with The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. Right now, we're going to talk about what or who are the major insurance companies. But before I can do that, we have to determine what kind of insurance are we talking about. Life insurance, health insurance, property and casualty insurance, or companies that do all of them together, which we call, multi-line insurance companies. There are thousand of insurance companies in the United States, and hundreds of foreign insurance companies that also do business here in the United States. So, before we can talk about who the major insurance companies are, we need to determine what kind of insurance you're interested in looking at. So, we can give you the correct answer. Another consideration regarding companies pertains to the type of insurance product that you're looking for. And whether or not that specific company sells it. So, depending upon your needs that can also be an important consideration. However, let's look at the top ten life insurance companies. They are in no particular order, New York Life, Metlife, Prudential Financial, Northwestern Mutual, MassMutual, Principal Financial Group. For our educators, TIAA-CREF, American Family Life Insurance Company, known better as AFLAC. Lincoln Financial, and Genworth Insurance Company. Next, for your consideration would be the top property and casualty insurance companies. Those of course, would start out with the largest, State Farm, followed by Farmers Insurance, Allstate Insurance, Nationwide Insurance, Progressive Insurance, and our girl, Flo. Geico, and our favorite, little animal, USAA, Amica Mutual, the oldest property and casualty insurance company in the United States. Liberty Mutual, which today includes Safeco, and Chubb Insurance, often considered the insurance company for the rich person. Unlike life insurance and property and casualty insurance, health insurance, another coverage important to consumers, doesn't operate on a nationwide basis. Therefore the next group of companies are going to be mainly in the north-eastern part of the United States. since I'm in Pennsylvania and that's where this list is focused. So, let's begin with Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Tufts Associated Health Maintenance Organization, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care of New England, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Massachusetts. Connecticut Care and Health Net of Connecticut, Excellus Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Rochester Region. Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, Health of New England, Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Connecticut. Now, as you can see, these companies are on a top ten, but whether they're your top ten will depend on where you live in the U.S. I'm professor Kevin Lynch from The American College in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. For more information, go to www.TheAmericanCollege.edu. We've been talking about what or who are the top U.S. insurance companies. Thank you.
